Andrew Hynes papers, 1789-1864 (bulk 1803-1852).

Papers consist of correspondence and legal documents. Correspondence is mostly of a business nature related to the sugar market, currency, shipments of cotton and sugar, and customers' requests for items. Other letters include Edward J. Gay's response to an invitation to a Whig Party convention (July 31, 1840); Calvin Oak's depiction of the steamer MAGNOLIA when it was destroyed by a boiler explosion (Jan. 11, 1852); and a Civil War letter by S. G. Estes, of the 2nd Mississippi Regiment. In his letter Estes tells of a Union cavalry attack on Richmond, Va., and desertion among the Confederate troops (March 7, 1864). Legal documents are primarily deeds and land conveyances for acreage in Nashville and Davidson County, Tenn. and Iberville Parish, La.

Edward: Landscape painter; Mt. Vernon and Cragsmoor, New York, married Martha Feary, an art critic. Their son Duncan was also an artist. Edward was born in Dublin, Ireland. Andrew Hynes, a soldier and planter, was born Sept. 20,1788 in Bardstown, Ky. He moved to Nashville, Tenn., in 1810 where he joined the state militia, and later served as aide-de-camp to General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans. He married Ann Erwin of Home Place Plantation, Iberville Parish, La. on March 2, 1817. Lavinia, one of their seven children, married Edward J. Gay, who was to become a congressman from Louisiana.
